HE IS SAME TOWARDS A FRIEND OR AN ENEMY
Samah Satrau ca mitre ca – he is the same with reference to an enemy and a friend.
Someone who desires your well-being out of affection for you is a friend, mitra. Satru, an enemy, is one who wants to hurt you in some manner. The question here is, how can a jnani have a Satru? Why should he first create an enemy and then be equable towards him? A jnani does not create enemies, but they arise nevertheless just by his being himself. Suppose all he does is sit under a tree. There will always be someone who is jealous because he is not capable of sitting under a tree. Whether a jnani has a big palace or is simply sitting under a tree, someone will be jealous.
